The Port Isabel Tarpons once again participated in the Los Fresnos 7 on 7 Football League this past Monday (June 29th) and were matched up against the San Benito Greyhounds 1st team. The Tarpons were coming off a 58-12 win over the San Benito Greyhounds 2nd team, but against the 1st team, Port Isabel was not so lucky.
Port Isabel came out flat from the start especially since the Tarpons were missing quite a few players including three starters. On Port Isabel’s 1st possession, Kyle DeMoss (25/37 175yds 3td 2int) was intercepted by a Greyhound defender which gave San Benito momentum early. The Greyhounds capitalized on the turnover with a 50 yard bomb for a touchdown. The San Benito defense then forced a three and out and scored on a 10 yard touchdown pass and converted the two point conversion to give the Greyhounds an early 16-0 lead. Port Isabel knew they had to respond and did. On the Tarpons next offensive possession DeMoss found Blake Sapp (4rec 23yds 1td) for a 6 yard touchdown. Chris Jones (9rec 55yds 1td 1xp) caught the two point conversion to cut the lead down to 8. The Greyhounds countered on their next possession with another 50 yard touchdown to make the score 24-8. As the 1st half came to a close Port Isabel had the final possession. DeMoss engineered a scoring drive which included short passes and a crucial 10 yard 3rd down conversion to tight end EJ Holland (4rec 28yds). The drive concluded with an 8 yard touchdown pass from DeMoss to Matt Garza (5rec 42yds 1td 1xp) to make the score 24-14 at halftime in favor of the Greyhounds.
San Benito opened up on offense to start the 2nd half. The Greyhounds drove the length of the field and scored on an 8 yard touchdown, the two point conversion failed as DeMoss made a leaping interception. Port Isabel then went three and out and San Benito scored a 5 yard touchdown to extend their lead 36-14. The Tarpons woes continued as DeMoss threw his 2nd interception of the game in the redzone, which crushed any hope of a comeback. The Tarpons however, continued to battle and scored on their next offensive series. DeMoss found Julian Pererra (3rec 27yds) on an 18 yard corner route which set up a 5 yard touchdown pass to Jones. Garza converted the two point conversion to make the score 36-22. Port Isabel’s defense ended the game on good note. The Greyhounds threatened to score again, but Tarpon linebacker EJ Ybarra extended all he could to make an interception preventing another San Benito touchdown.
The final score remained San Benito 36 Port Isabel 22. The Tarpons will continue to compete in the Los Fresnos 7 on 7 Football League and will have another game in Los Fresnos Monday July 6th at 6pm. Everyone please come out and support!
