The Port Isabel Tarpons once again participated in the Los Fresnos 7 on 7 Football League this past Monday (July 6th) and were matched up against the Los Fresnos Falcons 1st team. The last time these two teams played, the Falcons were too much for the Tarpons to handle, but in the rematch the tide turned towards Port Isabel.
The Tarpons began the game on offense and were energized by a 35 yard completion from Kyle DeMoss (19/25 243yds 4td 0int) to CJ Barrera (4rec 58yds 1td) on the 2nd play of the game. DeMoss then found his tight end EJ Holland (5rec 30yds 1td) for a 2 yard touchdown to put Port Isabel up 6-0 to begin the game. The momentum transferred over to the defensive side of the ball as Matt Garza intercepted a Los Fresnos pass on the Falcons 1st play from scrimmage. The Tarpons capitalized on the turnover as DeMoss found Barrera for an 8 yard touchdown strike. Bubba Gonzalez (4rec 76yds 1td 2xp) converted the two point conversion to make the score 14-0. Los Fresnos did not go down without a fight, on their very next possession the Falcons scored on a 4 yard touchdown to cut the lead down to 8. Los Fresnos defense then stopped Port Isabel on their next drive. The Falcons aerial assault continued as they scored on a 50 yard bomb and converted the two point conversion to tie up the score 14-14. Port Isabel responded right before the half came to a close as DeMoss hit Gonzalez for a 50 yard touchdown of their, but Gonzalez was not done making plays, in addition he converted the two point conversion. The score at halftime was 22-14 in favor of the Tarpons.
The Falcons began the 2nd half on offense and began a long time consuming drive which ended with a 5 yard touchdown to make the score 22-20. Port Isabel got a big play at the perfect time as DeMoss connected with Joe “Paco” Vega (4rec 59yds 1td) for a 41 yard touchdown. On his way to the end zone Vega juked two men completely out of their shoes which got the Tarpon sideline going crazy. Los Fresnos quickly quieted the rowdy Tarpons as they scored on a 50 yard touchdown on the very next play but the two point conversion failed as Tarpon Cornerback Julian Pererra made the touch right before the Falcon receiver scored. The score was now 28-26 still in favor of the Tarpons. With time winding Port Isabel tried to take some time off the clock with a couple of short passes to Vega and Holland, but Los Fresnos got the ball back with three minutes remaining. The Falcons put on an impressive drive and had four chances to score from 5 yards out, but the Tarpon seawall defense prevailed led by Safety Blake Sapp who deflected a pass in the end zone and Cornerback Chris Jones who deflected 2 passes in the end zone during the goal line stance including the final fourth down attempt by the Falcons. Time ran out as Port Isabel held on for the victory and shocked Los Fresnos.
The final score remained Port Isabel 28 Los Fresnos 26. The Tarpons will continue to compete in the Los Fresnos 7 on 7 Football League and will have another game in Los Fresnos Monday July 13th at 6pm. Everyone please come out and support!
