The Port Isabel Helmet Project

After getting word that San Benito had used a new inflatable helmet for the 2003 season. Some P.I. booster club members started to talk about how great it would be if Port Isabel had their own helmet for the upcoming football season. The main people who worked early in the acquisition of the helmet was Memo Torres, Johnny Rivera, and Bennie Ochoa III.

They had selected an inflatable helmet but it came at a high price of $8500, but they were determined. They were about 1/3rd of the way on committed contributions when they approached First National Bank of South Padre Island. They thought it was a great idea! They said that they would cover the remainding balance if they were to raise a little more funds.

That was what the extra motivation the booster members needed. With the help of longtime game announcer, Gualberto Gonzalez, they raised some more money in the following weeks and with the money secured Port Isabel now had a new Inflatable Helmet!

The helmet setup duties are now handled by longtime Tarpon fan, Raul Loera.
