2006-2007

#2 Nolan Nunez, RB
336 Attempts, 2500yds, 29 TDs,
Longest Run 98yds

Nolan was elusive and fast, he was capable of breaking a long run at any time and scored several times on PI first play of the game.

NOTE: Nolan ran for 275yds on 11 carries and scored 5 TDs to earn the Ford Player of the Week honors in a week 5, 36-7 win over Zapata more.

2005

Marky Villareal, RB
174 Attemps, 1395 yds, 8.0 yds/carry, 13 TDs - 12 games

NOTE: Set at the time the RGV record for most yards in a game with 403 yards versus Raymondille (eventhough a 50 and 60 yard runs were called back because of penalties!)

Also a Track star, Marky won a silver medal in the 300m hurdles in 38.3 secs at the State Track and Field meet.

1992-1994

Jimmy Gonzalez, RB/DB
1203 yds ( senior yr only),
3yr starter as DB: 20 INTs

Note: Jimmy help lead PI in a stunning upset of State Ranked Cuero in 1994. He earned First Team All-State DB

Coaches Corner: "Jimmy was a well-rounded running back because he could block, pass receive and definitely run with the ball," Tony Villarreal said. "He'd stop on a dime, put on a move, cut back and accelerate."

1993-1994

Gabe Villarreal, QB/LB
1200+ yds, 20 TDs ( senior yr only),
12 tackles/game, 13 sacks

Note: Earned All-State 2nd Team Linebacker. Gabe went on to play Tennesse Tech and was the son of former Def. Coordinator legend Eliseo Villarreal.

1993-1995

Gilbert Verduzco, WR/DB
As a Jr. He caught 29 passes for 835 yards (28.8 average) and 14TDs, 30+ INTs

Note: Earned All-State selection in 3yrs. Gilbert was also a standout 4yr Varsity Starter in Basketball. Earning the District's Newcomer of the Year as a Freshman. more

Coach Corner: "When the game's on the line, you've got to find your go-to man," Port Isabel coach Tony Villarreal said. "Gilbert has won many games for us."

2003 Team

The 2003 team earned PIs third
Region IV Quarterfinal trohpy in a
3-hr 4OT, 63-61 win against Rice Consolidated. The Tarpons got off on another infamous slow start that year. With key injuries the team compiled a 3-3 record, but they eventually composed themselves and went on to win 7 consecutive games including wins over Hondo and Liberty Hill before losing to Marlin in the state semi-finals. 2002 Team

The 2002 team may not have a Quarterfinal trophy, but it might have gotten closest to winning the state title. PI has been known to start off slow and this year was no different. Things started to turn around in a week 3 'Battle of Hwy 100' match. PI went toe-to-toe with rival Los Fresnos (11-1), but by the end of the offensive showdown LF was the victor with a 42-35 win.

Port Isabel went on to win eight consecutive games before meeting with Bandera in the regionals. Bandera went into halftime with a slim 13-10 lead. Late in the game a mis-assignment led to a blocked PI punt and Bandera recovered for a touchdown. PI and Bandera went on to trade TDs, by the end of the game Bandera was the victor with a
27-24 win. More.

NOTE: Bandera went on to win the Div 2, 3A State Title that year.

1994 Team

The 1994 team upset what was then the #1 3A team in the Texas, the Cuero Gobblers in a 20-20 tie; Port Isabel ended up advancing on penetrations. P.I. earned it's 2nd
Reg. IV Quarterfinal
trophy in a 24-11 win over Bandera. The team rushed for more than 4200 yards and scored 554 points in 15 games. PI lost to the eventual state champs Sealy Tigers 34-13, but their run helped PI gain respect throughout texas as the 1995 team was ranked 5th in the state by the AP early in the season. More

NOTE: A USA Today reporter called to verify Port Isabel's win as they had planned to put Cuero no. 8 in their National Top Ten poll.

1990 Team

1981 Team

The 1981 team became the first PI team to win a Region IV Championship. The team scored 417 points and only gave up 59pts including 9 shutouts (2 in the playoffs). The team went undefeated in the regular season and entered the state semi-final game against Cameron Yoe with 13-0 record. PI's went toe-to-toe with Cameron Yoe. By halftime Cameron lead 18-14, unfortunately, PI's great run came to an end as the final was
25-14 in favor of Cameron Yoe.. More , and Here

Eliseo Villarreal, DC
